3 months of night timber

I really like flying this plane at dusk. Excellent design of landing gear that actually works well. Wingspan is almost too short, looks odd. LEDs are super bright and look awesome at night. I have around 40+ flights on mine and my only two disappointment are I cant get oem replacement Props as they are always on backorder. The powerful 13" prop isRead more about review stating 3 months of night timber almost too big as it has hit the ground a few time on landings, especially in grass/rough with suspension flex. I had to trim and rebalance my prop to 12" due to a few impact nicks. The other part that REALLY sucks is the battery compartment. Its on the underside of the plane so you have to flip it upside down to pull the battery hatch and strap the battery in. Cradle use would be best to prevent rudder damage. I use a 2200mah 4s and its a good fit. The plastic pad the battery is suspended on and strapped to SUCKS. It has came unglued from the frame several times and then the battery pack puts pressure on the foam hatch. Its a terrible design. I don't understand how HH planes can be so awesome in many aspects then fail miserably in just a few really important areas. 5 star plane if the battery compt was on top of the fuse.

What a Blast to fly at night or during the day can't go wrong with a Timber

Wonderful RC airplane with a terrible gear design

Don't get me wrong. This is one of my go to airplanes since it is easy to fly from the side of a hill behind my house. I am probably on my 5th fuselage due to the gear snapping off. I know many of you immediately think, "well, your landings are surely to blame". I considered it for a while as some of the "events" happened with a slight crosswind sRead more about review stating Wonderful RC airplane with a terrible gear designo I blamed myself for possibly poor xwind technique. Yesterday, I confirmed what I suspected for a while. On a calm wind day, I took my night timber in addition to several other aircraft to a nice spot with asphalt pavement. On a couple of landings the airplane would swerve on rollout, but it didn't consistently do it and wasn't a big deal until one of the times it swerved hard enough to side load the gear and into immediately snapping the plastic the gear mounts to. None of the other aircraft did this with their traditional "fixed" landing gear. This is the same thing that has happened dozens of times to me with this model. For the most part, I put some CA in the break, put a clamp to hold it for a few hours, and the model is fine for a while until it breaks again. Rinse repeat about 10 times and the amount of missing plastic/CA ratio justifies a new fuselage.

My main issue is this: The gear can not handle almost any side loading.

A few things can help minimize the design defect, such as bringing the aircraft into a high alpha flare with power (mostly so it has so little forward momentum it's difficult to side load the gear). Also, avoiding crosswinds altogether or flawless crosswind controls throughout touchdown and roll out can help. Unfortunately, If your tires don't spin during rollout at the same rate, you are going to create adverse drag, leading to more drag and friction, leading to directional control issues during rollout, leading to a snapped gear and eventual fuselage replacement despite great landings. Multiple things beyond the RC pilot ability can initiate the sequence of side loading leading to a broken gear with this aircraft.

The design team did a great job of designing the gear to taxi and even takeoff over rough terrain (high power settings). The design to allow the gear to bend outboard is great and I've never had an issue unless the aircraft was essentially flown into a hill at a high rate of descent (did that once too). This aircraft takes "harder" landings better than most, and good landings worse than almost all due to the gear problem. Unfortunately, the gear are also allowed to hinge inward/inboard and if they do this with any momentum, they will fold under the aircraft and snap off. If the wheel base were wider, this would be less of an issue, but honestly, they would have been better off with the soft big wheels on a fixed sturdy aluminum gear IMHO. They also could have designed the gear to bend outward, but prevent it from bending inboard at all leading to a collapse/snap when the gear folds under the aircraft upon being side loaded.

All that said, I love this plane. I love the 3D maneuvers I can do with it. It look incredible at dusk and looks great taxiing around on rough surfaces. So I will continue to purchase new fuselages until I can figure out a good way to mount a better gear on this airplane.

This is a great plane

This is a great plane but beware of the "safe" mode... it worked until it intermittently flipped out and crashed the plane ... several times ... I've had to put humpty dumpy back together again ... gone through lots of glue and hair pulling ... once I figured out what was going on , I've been flying the plane in regular mode and everything has beeRead more about review stating This is a great planen great. The flight surfaces are huge so full flap is way way way to much to actually land safely with...for a novice pilot this plane presents some challenges

Great day and, night flyer!!!

The Night Timber X is a great flying plane. One can make this plane fly as a sport plane, 3D plane, STOL plane and, it can take a beating!!! I’ve flown this bird in all adverse kind of conditions, from 20 MPH crossed winds to rain!!! This plane just won’t give up, it wants to fly! After more than 60 flights under the aforementioned conditions it iRead more about review stating Great day and, night flyer!!!s still looking great. The only thing that has come a little loose is the side brackets on the landing gear but, that’s only because of an extremely hard landing while flying using a 4S 3600mHa which is too heavy plus, the wind changed from cross to tail wind on the last part of my approach thus not letting me abort which caused the brackets to loosen from the EPO foam. I solved that problem with regular Medium CA. It has hold on perfectly no issues whatsoever! I highly recommend this plane to any intermediate pilot.
